I love to bake.
Haha just kidding.
I prefer to assemble.
I’m not a big fan of wasting time or energy, so if I can skip the whole guessing game, I will. I don’t like wondering whether the oven is going to tinge my creation with char, rendering the past hour a bootless errand.
That means that whenever possible, I opt for assembly over oven.
Exhibit A: My annual flag cake, which is a big hit with my family every year.
This cake is the easiest thing you will ever create, but it also looks fun and fancy, and it tastes great, too!
The entire treat requires only four ingredients:
1 Sara Lee All-Butter Pound Cake (Ready in 10 Seconds)
1 tub 16 oz. Cool Whip
1 cup fresh strawberries
1 cup fresh blueberries
That’s all! Guys, I seriously can’t stress how easy this cake is. (Also, can we talk about this perfect heart-shaped strawberry??)
The steps are just as simple, and only take me 5-10 minutes every time I make it. Please note that I find dessert-making to be more of an art than a science, so most of my recipes are not exact — and they don’t need to be! Add your own flair and have fun while you play around with it!
1. Slice your pound cake into 1/2-inch slices (Or however thin you want them.)
2. Lay cake slices into dish in rows (Fill in gaps with halved slices, as desired.)
3. Cover cake slices with Cool Whip (Level out with spoon)
4. Add another layer of cake slices
5. Spread more Cool Whip over cake (And so on until you’re happy with the height)
6. Arrange blueberries in rows to form square (I like to keep the ‘stars’ facing up)
7. Next, slice strawberries into 1/8ths (Or however thin you prefer)
8. Arrange sliced strawberries in lines (I like them to face the same direction)
9. Refrigerate to taste
This dessert is delicious right away or refrigerated, and it lasts for days for a post-holiday treat!
Plus, since it only contains four ingredients, it’s not packed with added sugar and butter, so it feels refreshingly light as you devour it! (And, like, fruit, amiright?)
The best part about this Memorial Day treat? It can be modified to your liking!
Prefer different berries? Use blackberries and raspberries instead!
Have way too much Cool Whip in your freezer because you love a good deal and they were 2 for $4 this weekend? Lather on more Cool Whip!
Bought one too many pound cakes at Harmon’s? Add more layers!
Need the cake to level at the top? Cut the cake into thicker slices to boost it up!
The possibilities are seriously endless with this dessert, and you can make your decisions as you go, playing with slices and dollops.
Best of all, it can also be repurposed time and again. I’ve used it for Memorial Day, the 4th of July, and Flag Day, and I even make a variation for Bastille Day!
In sum, if you don’t have time to fuss with baking, but you want to impress your summer friends with a delectable treat, this Easy Assemble No-Bake Patriotic Flag Cake is the way to go.
